The Main Filtration Types and What They Actually Do
Most air purifiers combine more than one filtration stage, but it helps to understand each technology on its own terms before evaluating a unit.
True HEPA Filtration
This is the gold standard for particle removal. A True HEPA filter captures at least 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns and larger — that covers most pollen, pet dander, mold spores, and fine dust. The 0.3-micron threshold sounds small, but it's actually the hardest size to trap; larger and smaller particles are captured even more efficiently due to different physical mechanisms.
Activated Carbon Filters
Activated carbon works through adsorption — pollutant molecules bind to the porous carbon surface rather than passing through it. This is how purifiers address cooking odors, tobacco smoke gases, and VOCs from cleaning products or new furniture. HEPA doesn't touch these gaseous compounds at all, which is why units targeting odors or chemical exposure pair the two technologies.
UV-C Light
UV-C lamps are marketed for killing bacteria and viruses. In laboratory conditions, UV-C does inactivate microorganisms — but in consumer purifiers, airflow speed often limits the exposure time needed for reliable results. Ionizers
Ionizers release charged particles that cause airborne pollutants to cluster and fall out of the air. They don't collect those particles — they just redistribute them onto surfaces. "HEPA-Type" Is Not the Same as True HEPA

Only products specifically labeled 'True HEPA' or citing the official 99.97% at 0.3-micron standard are held to that performance benchmark. When filtration quality matters — particularly for asthma or allergy management — this distinction is meaningful.
Room Sizing: Why Getting This Right Matters More Than Brand
An air purifier's stated room coverage is only as meaningful as the CADR rating behind it. CADR — Clean Air Delivery Rate — measures how quickly the unit cleans a specific volume of air of smoke, dust, and pollen. The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) certifies CADR ratings, and those numbers offer a reliable cross-brand comparison point.
A practical rule of thumb: your purifier's smoke CADR should be at least two-thirds of your room's square footage. For a 300-square-foot living room, that means a smoke CADR of at least 200. Running an undersized unit on maximum speed generates more noise and filter wear without delivering proportionally better results.
Also consider ceiling height. Most coverage ratings assume 8-foot ceilings. Rooms with higher ceilings hold more air volume, so a unit rated for 400 square feet may effectively serve less space in a room with 10-foot ceilings.
Match the Unit to the Room First
Before comparing filter types or features, calculate your room's square footage and look up the CADR ratings for any unit you're considering. A correctly sized mid-range purifier will outperform an oversized premium model running in a room it was never designed to serve efficiently.
Placement matters too. Position the unit where airflow isn't obstructed — away from corners and furniture, ideally in the part of the room where you spend the most time.
When an Air Purifier Actually Helps — and When It Doesn't
Air purifiers are a genuinely useful tool in specific situations, but they're often oversold as a fix for all indoor air quality concerns. Here's an honest breakdown.
Where the evidence is solid
